Introduction to Meditation

White Jade Buddha - Bejing China

Meditation has played a very important part in Buddhist history for the past 2,500 years.

All our neuroses arise from a psychological imbalance and produce either over excited or depressed states, both of which from a Buddhist point of view, are regarded as extreme. Also we constantly superimpose our view onto situations and consequently deceive ourselves as to the true nature of reality. We don't know how much is real or how much is our own projection.

Sitting meditation enables us to cut through neurotic states of mind resulting in equilibrium, greater stability and inner harmony. Simultaneously, meditation practice broadens our vision dismantling our egocentric view and as our projections are cut through we gain a more accurate overall perspective.

Obstacles to meditation practice continually arise and in fact to some extent become more predominant as we progress. This being the case, practitioners in the lineage have conceived the antidotes in this manual which neutralize neuroses.

Meditation allows us to have compassion towards ourselves and rather than regarding our neuroses and emotions in a negative way we begin to see them as manure for further growth. Aggression towards ourselves lessens and we begin to have a sacred outlook of ourselves.
